THANKS FOR ATTENDING NALC!
March 27-29, Alpha Zeta members from across the country met in central Iowa for the 2014 National Agricultural Leadership Conference. With a theme of "Growing to Serve," the conference was held just steps away from the Iowa State University campus and was jam-packed with great educational workshops, speakers and agricultural tours of the region. 13 different chapters were able to send members to attend the event hosted by the Wilson Chapter.
At the Welcome Dinner, students and alumni were at the edge of their seats listening to the keynote speaker, David Acker, Associate Dean of Academic & Global Programs at Iowa State University. Dean Acker spoke about the growing population and the pressure on those in agriculture to figure out how to feed a growing world. He spoke about how agriculture is increasingly a knowledge-based activity and new knowledge will help us solve problems that seem insurmountable today.
Friday kicked off with two different AgTours that highlighted some of the best of Iowa agriculture. Tour stops included DuPont Pioneer, Haige Manufacturing, The World Food Prize, Sukup, Bear Creek Watershed, Vermeer Manufacturing, a national Wildlife Refuge and Prairie Moon Winery.
On Saturday, students and alumni attended educational and professional development workshops where they heard speakers on topics such as ag advocacy, climate change, leading with your values, ag marketing, financial planning after college and being a steward of the land. Saturday afternoon, all attendees participated in two service projects on the Iowa State campus and in the Ames community. Students and Alumni worked together to help build new trails in two different parks. The service projects were a brand new component of NALC this year and the overwhelming response was very positive! Hopefully it will become a new NALC tradition.
Lots of awards were handed out at the Banquet Saturday evening. Click here
for a summary and photos of the award recipients. The North Carolina Chapter was the lucky recipient of the 2014 Founder's Cup.
Looking forward to next year, an announcement will be made before the end of the school year as to where NALC & Conclave will be held in 2015.
