Big Little Night!

Big Little Night!

On February 15, 2013, The Alpha Zeta Cook Chapter welcomed its new potential members.  On this night, the new members learn about the Alpha Zeta history and what the fraternity values.  This is the night they get to really meet the brothers of the fraternity.  It is also when the new members become "littles" when they get their "bigs", the older members of the fraternity.  Once they meet their bigs, the littles are introduced to the rest of their Alpha Zeta family, which includes graduated alumni and other members of the fraternity, even faculty members!  Most families end up doing events over the semester such as hold family dinners dinners or do community service events together...

As one of our recruitment events this semester, Cook Chapter decided to host a video game night on February 7th. Held at a campus center, multiple stations were set up with games like Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Kart. Anyone was welcome to join in the festivities, and we had many potential members attend. Everyone had a blast, and we even started a (non video game) session of Apples to Apples, which got very loud...

First New Member Meeting and Applebees

Right after the first brother meeting of the semester, it is traditional for the new members to learn about the fraternity, watch a video, and make sure that they want to pledge. As a part of this, the brothers take them out to a local Applebees for half price appetizers. This is a chance for the new members to meet the brothers in an informal setting and really decide if pledging is right for them. The brothers also meet all the potential new members for the semester and see if they click with any in particular - so they can ask to be their "big brother" for the semester...

Ice Cream Social

Originally posted by Aubrey B. Weibel

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!!! Every child has sung that song and when we get older our love for ice cream does not go away. It is delicious regardless of the season and when enjoyed in good company, it is priceless. Ice Cream Social is one of our newer rush events and has proven to be quite a hit. Brothers bring toppings such as caramel and chocolate syrup, whipped cream, reese’s pieces, m & ms and other goodies to put on top of either the vanilla or chocolate ice cream provided and once again the brothers mix and mingle with any rushes that come out to the event.

Winter Ice Skating-Cornell Chapter

Winter Ice Skating-Cornell Chapter

After enduring a week of bitterly cold temperatures to and from class, what better way to enjoy the first weekend after the beginning of classes than to clear the snow off a local pond and go ice skating and play some impromptu hockey? On the last Saturday of January, the last day of prolonged single digit temperatures, a group of members scouted out a local pond rumored to be a good place for skating. After overcoming the challenge posed by finding a pond covered in snow on the edge of the field, they cleared it off as much they could before giving in to the temptation of skating, brought out the hockey sticks and a puck and began a game. Exhausted and cold, they made their way home for warm mugs of hot chocolate. This activity was a great way to build brotherhood among the members of the fraternity.

Each new member was given gifts related to their lineage and photos with their bigs and lineages were taken. This event creates lasting fellowship!

Members of the Florida Chapter got together from 6 PM to 9 PM on February 23 to help makeover Idylwild Elementary, a local Gainesville elementary school. They were joined by members of the UF chapter of American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). Members worked on landscaping the outdoor areas of the school, repainting walls and picnic benches, and laying new grass outside. It was a great night of bonding with members and new friends in ASABE, while coming together to help out a great local cause!

S’mores. Who doesn’t like them? A soft, melted marshmallow with melted chocolate and graham crackers over a warm fire is pure bliss. That is why Alpha Zeta Cook Chapter always hosts a s’mores rush event. The event is held right outside of our unofficial home, the Cook Campus Center and brothers come to eat some delicious s’mores while interacting with potential new members about why Alpha Zeta is so amazing. This event is open to anyone who wishes to come by...
