The members that participated in the clean-up did not mind taking time out of their schedule to put the trash back where it belongs and off the street. Usually the road clean-ups are on a weekend morning to avoid the heat of the day but our service chair, Jaclyn Irwin, planned an evening clean-up to help add variation to the times of our events. The members met up on campus to carpool over to the road. Planning involves picking up the supplies ahead of time and bringing it to our AZ road. The road clean-up is always a good excuse to get outside and help the community.

UF Road Clean Up Service 8/28/11

The UF Chapter of Alpha Zeta adopted a road in our community about three years ago with the commitment to keep it clean by completing at least six clean up service events each fiscal year. Since we did not hold events this summer four members attended this event in our bright orange safety vests to kick the year off on the right foot. Even though it is considered a service event members enjoyed catching up on summer travels sharing stories and talking about what is ahead for their fall semester. It was a great way for members to get together outside of school and help improve the community one garbage bag at a time.

North Carolina SPCA Dog Walk

North Carolina SPCA Dog Walk

On April 16th, four Brothers attended the SPCA of Wake County's Dog Walk.  They only had 1 dog and her name is Sissy.  There were a lot of different rescue organizations, vets, and other vendors set up under tents giving away free goodies and information in Moore Square.  We started the 3K in Moore Square and walked around downtown Raleigh and ended up back at Moore Square.  There were a lot of people there and the weather was overcast and breezy but not hot. All the money raised went to the Wake County SPCA.  The theme was "No Kill Now" and $242,429.19 was raised.  Alpha Zeta raised $485.00.  There were also 8 other folks on our team who were not apart of Alpha Zeta, but helped out.

UF Pledge Spring '11 Puppy Hill Farm Rescue at Petsmart Service 3-27-11

This event was planned by Corinne Oliphant, the pledge class service chair. At Petsmart the Puppy Hill Farm Animal Rescue group brings dogs and cats that are available for adoption. The 11 in attendance brought the animals in after they walked them. Pledges and members were told to talk to the customers and try to persuade them to adopt a pet. Before finishing the service event, the dogs were walked again. It was a great time spent with the animals and advocating for their adoption!

This service event was planned by our spring semester pledge class but was opened to all members as a service event requirement. Two Tails Ranch is a "training, medical, breeding and retirement facility for hundreds of elephants and exotic felines for over 20 years." They are revamping their main barn and some back pens so we helped with general maintenance and landscaping. This was truly an incredible experience for the 10 members and several pledges that were able to attend to be able to interact with elephants and will hopefully be a service project the UF chapter of AZ will carry on in the following years.

The UF chapter of AZ adopted a road a few years ago. Requirements to keep this road include at least six clean-ups per year. Since we do not hold events over the summer this comes to three road clean ups per semester. Nine members attended this clean up. This is a really great way to not only socialize together outdoors but help the environment and community by making sure all the trash is picked up and out of harm's way!

Habitat for Humanity's annual campus race! The route circles some of the busiest parts of campus, passing by the O'Connell Center, the Swamp, Turlington Plaza, and the Reitz Union. Planning involved our service chair, Kaitlyn Summerfield, making sure those that wanted to walk/run were registered, paid, and knew where to meet on campus. Our nine members that participated benefited by getting good exercise, socializing, and helping to support Alachua Habitat for Humanity who's goal is to provide safe, decent, affordable homes for families in need.

This is our third year planning a Family Day. Our social chair, who is Dalal Hares this year, plans it every spring semester. This year we met for brunch outside in a courtyard among our Entomoloy buildings before heading out to Single Vision, a non-profit endangered species educational facility located in Melrose, FL. Single Vision aims to prevent tigers from becoming extinct from poaching and habitat destruction. Next was a visit to the Butterfly Rainforest, which is a part of UF's  Florida Museum of Natural History. It includes a four-story, outdoor screened enclosure with waterfalls, a walking trail, tropical plants and hundreds of live butterflies. Families got a break for lunch and some rest before dinner at a local restaurant with Dr. George Burgess as a speaker. Dr. Burgess is a part of UF's Ichthyology department and a national expert on sharks appearing on countless news programs and the Discovery Channel.
