The Florida Chapter of Alpha Zeta decided to take an evening to learn about our mascot, the alligator. Our service chair Jaclyn Irwin, interested in conservation biology, held a service event with Florida Fish and Wildlife to learn how to properly teach people of all ages proper care and information about them. Members attended the FWC Alligator Outreach Orientation to learn how to present information on the alligator ranging from the biology to the different laws surrounding the animal.  The members met up on campus to carpool over Florida Wildlife Service Research Office...

UF Pledge Rush Events and Interviews

Originally posted by Claire D. Page

The Florida Chapter of Alpha Zeta holds a series of rush events each semester to allow potential members the opportunity to interact with current members and find out a little bit more about what Alpha Zeta is at UF. The rush events for this year consisted of our annual event Bat Watching with the Chancellor, and a few new events like Swing Dancing and a Road Clean-up. The events were a great time for potential pledges to get a feel for what events we do and see if they like how they fit in our chapter...

Usually the road clean-ups are on a weekend morning to avoid the heat of the day but our service chair, Jaclyn Irwin, planned an evening clean-up to help add variation to the times of our events. The members met up on campus to carpool over to the road. Planning involves picking up the supplies ahead of time and bringing it to our AZ road. The road clean-up is always a good excuse to get outside and help the community.

The UF Chapter of Alpha Zeta adopted a road in our community about three years ago with the commitment to keep it clean by completing at least six clean up service events each fiscal year. Since we did not hold events this summer four members attended this event in our bright orange safety vests to kick the year off on the right foot. Even though it is considered a service event members enjoyed catching up on summer travels sharing stories and talking about what is ahead for their fall semester. It was a great way for members to get together outside of school and help improve the community one garbage bag at a time.

Cornell Chapter Helps Repair Raised Beds

Cornell Chapter Helps Repair Raised Beds

Originally posted by Emmaline A. Long

On April 30th, 7 members of the Cornell Chapter went to Woodsedge Apartments, a retirement apartment community near campus, to help get their raised bed gardens ready for planting. Two years ago, the community raised money and built around 15 raised beds for the residents to plant. Each resident gets their own bed to keep for the summer. Beds are 24” high instead of the usual 12” so they do not have to bend over as far. We joined many residents and community members and spent the morning doing repairs to their beds. We even found out one of the residents is an AZ Alumni from Michigan State!

NC Relay For Life

On April 8th, North Carolina State University hosted their annual Relay For Life on Lee Field.  18 of our brothers went out and supported Cancer research in hopes to raise money.  As an on-site fundraiser we had Cornhole boards put out so people could pay to play.  The event did not last too long into the night like it was supposed to because of bad weather.  By 11 o'clock we had to take down everything and leave.  Everyone that participated in this event had a blast even when it started to rain.
