Working Dog Winery

On September 18, Cook AZ visited Working Dog Winery in East Windsor, NJ. We took a tour of the vineyards led by one of the owners, Mark Carduner. We learned about many of the factors important in successful grape production including sun exposure, brix levels, strategic leaf pruning, and protection from predators. We discussed the relationship between ag operations and the surrounding communities and the importance of having the support of surrounding residents. We also talked about the social aspects of agriculture, such as using the vineyard for events like weddings and jazz nights to help boost profits and community exposure.

The Snyder Farm serves as the Rutgers center for sustainable agriculture. While here, we learned about the many different crops they grow and some of the research they are doing to help educate and provide resources for NJ farmers on the topics of changing markets, politics, economics, and environmental impact.

On April 15th, Sigma Alpha hosted their eleventh annual Swing-a-Thon fundraiser.  Fifteen brothers signed up to swing for fifteen minutes on the Brickyard. Each brother paid $10 to swing on the porch swing and received a t-shirt. Alpha Zeta helped to sponsor the event by donating over $100, so our name is printed on the shirts. The revenue from Swing-a-Thon goes towards Agriculture in the Classroom programs.

NC Preschool Farm Animal Talk

NC Preschool Farm Animal Talk

On Friday March 22nd, 13 brothers went to the Country Day Montessori Preschool to give them a lesson about chickens and pigs. We brought four chicks and two pigs. The kids were thrilled to pet the animals and the brothers enjoyed spending time with the kids. It is a great opportunity to introduce kids to agriculture when some of them probably never touched a farm animal. We have developed a great partnership with the preschool and hope to go back for Earth Day to plant flowers.

During Agriculture Awareness Week we hold a forum regarding the issues in agriculture to help educate the brotherhood, as well as the public.  We advertise this forum throughout the week through social media and word of mouth.  This year the forum was held on Wednesday at 5:30pm. The theme was Food Safety and Security.  The Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture, Joe Reardon, opened up the forum by giving his story of how he became involved in Agriculture and how he got to where he is today.  We then heard from other panelists, including a NCSU animal science professor, high school teacher, and a student...
