A Day with AZ Cornell 1/21/12

During rush week at the Cornell chapter, members and potential new members went on a road trip to Syracuse and the surrounding areas. We decided to take this opportunity to have quality guy/girl time. The men of AZ trekked to the nearest casino where some were rewarded for their poker faces, while others, though not as lucky, still had a blast. The guys concluded their trip with a belt-busting dinner at an all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse. The Cornell ladies had other ideas. Some flocked to a local ice skating rink while others visited the zoo. We later met up at the carousel at Syracuse’s famous Carousel Mall and went on it for a few rides...

After Thanksgiving is an especially exciting time for our chapter. Not only is there only one week of classes left, but it’s time to prepare for the holidays! Just like any family, the holiday season at Alpha Zeta is filled with events that help to not only bring in the holiday cheer, but also to improve brothership throughout the house. This holiday season was no different.  In preparation for the holiday season, the house purchased a Christmas tree for display in the formal room and together, members of the house decorated the Christmas tree...

Our chapter’s chef, Peter Seznek, is the president of the local girl’s hockey league and asks us to help our every year. The tournament was a weekend long (Dec. 2nd-Dec. 4th) with games played at two different rinks in the area. Members help out by running the clock and keeping score for games. During our initiation weekend at the beginning of November, our chapter participated in Adopt-a-Highway which we do every semester during our initiation weekend. It is the first community service event the new members have the opportunity to participate in officially. Fourteen members were able to participate this semester. We have a 2 mile stretch about 10min. from campus that we are assigned to clean. The event always ends with a lunch at a restaurant in Ithaca.

During the first weekend in November, the Cornell Chapter held our weekend Initiation event. Because our chapter is both a social and honors fraternity, our members are first initiated into our chapter, and then into the National Organization. Our current new members will be Nationally Initiated in the spring semester. Our chapter initiation is a weekend-long event that starts on Friday evening and concludes on Sunday morning. It includes a night-long ceremony on Friday night, social events during the day on Saturday including watching our chapter movie over dinner, and a full house clean-up on Sunday morning.

Cornell Chapter Visits an Active's Apple Farm

Did you know that New York is the second largest apple producing state after Washington? Members from the Cornell Chapter visited Van Acker farms this past weekend, an apple farm along Lake Ontario which is owned by active, Chelsea Van Acker. We left Friday afternoon and visited the Haunted Hayrides of Greater Rochester (owned by a past active) and then went to the apple farm on Saturday morning. We were able to talk with her family about different parts of the apple industry including labor and how the new e-verify system will effect them, planting, pruning, harvesting, marketing, and everything in between. Most of the apples on this particular farm are sold to Motts to be made into applesauce, rather than being sold for fresh market...
