Last week, we at the Florida Chapter woke up bright and early to visit SeaWorld in Orlando. We were granted early-hours access to the park, and given a behind-the-scenes tour of their dolphin training facility, manatee and sea turtle rehabilitation centers, and veterinary lab. We were even lucky enough to see a one month old manatee being examined for overall health after being treated for a buoyancy problem which prevented him from submerging...

A group of the Florida Chapter went out to Kanapaha Botanical Gardens this past week to help maintain their gardens. Kanapaha is a 62 acre botanical garden with the states largest public bamboo display and herb garden in the Southeast region. Kanapaha was nicest enough to take us on a tour of the gardens before they showed us where we would be performing our service activities. We helped maintain the bamboo displays and mulched the area to be aesthetically pleasing to the public.

Volunteering at Lubee Bat Conservancy

This past weekend, the Florida Chapter went to the Lubee Bat Conservancy Festival. The conservancy only allows the public in on this one day out of the whole year. The goal of the festival is to educate the public on how beneficial bats are to the Florida environment and ecosystems.  Additionally, the festival helps raise awareness and money for the conservancy. As a chapter, we learned a lot about bats and were happy to help the conservancy by assisting with parking, and educating the public about the conservancy.

Road Clean Up

On Saturday, we performed our first road clean up on our Alpha Zeta Road! We all had a lot of fun seeing who all could find the most unique piece of trash. It was an absolutely beautiful day for a road clean up. Everyone went into pairs: one person picking up trash and one person holding the garbage bag. We ended up collecting 4 bags of trash. We have one road clean up down and two more to go! Can't wait!

Last weekend, we volunteered at the Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary. It was really cool to see the different types of monkeys—they all have such distinct personalities! We worked hard to create a fun and safe new home for them in one of the cages. We all had a great time getting to know each other better, too! It was inspiring to see how much the workers loved and cared for the monkeys, and I can't wait to go back and help some more!

On March 24th, brothers from the Florida Chapter volunteered their time in lending a hand to the only privately run elephant sanctuary within the United States. Although the weather was menacing, we had a great time while working hard to help the Two Tails Ranch in its mission of caring for elephants and educating the public.

On Saturday, March 30, 2013, members, alumni, and friends of the members of the Florida Chapter arrived at SeaWorld in Orlando bright and early for a behind-the-scenes tour. We got to see quarantined manatees and turtles, many of which were being treated for cold stress, and a pilot whale named 300 that is being rehabbed after developing scoliosis. We also got to see some of the transport vehicles used in rescuing animals throughout Florida and the labs where SeaWorld monitors water quality and processes animal blood samples.

We have done many fundraisers, big and small, from our annual Rose sale during Valentine's day to concessions at varsity sporting events. Scavenger Hunt: Chapter Bonding for Relay for Life

Scavenger Hunt: Chapter Bonding for Relay for Life

Originally posted by Jacquelyn E. Neal

At the member meeting on Tuesday, March 19th, the Florida Chapter engaged in some fun chapter bonding in preparation for Relay for Life. The chapter was divided into teams based on their shift for the event, and asked to complete six tasks. Some of the tasks included making up an Alpha Zeta Cheer, serenading a random stranger by singing "Happy Birthday", and  taking group photos at several University of Florida landmarks. The teams had a half an hour to complete the challenge and had tons of fun while getting to know each other. Some of the pledges participated as well and got to know the members. As the second year of the scavenger hunt, hopefully it will become an annual bonding tradition for the chapter!

They were joined by members of the UF chapter of American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). Members worked on landscaping the outdoor areas of the school, repainting walls and picnic benches, and laying new grass outside. It was a great night of bonding with members and new friends in ASABE, while coming together to help out a great local cause!
