Puerto Rico hosting National Service ProjectThe National Service Project will take on a somewhat international flair this year. Alpha Zeta will travel to Puerto Rico January 7-12 to work in a community garden. But the trip will be more than a service project. Participants will tour unique agricultural sites on the island including a milking parlor, coffee plantation, tropical fruit production facility and the Bacardi distillery in San Juan, as well as hear from speakers about the Puerto Rican agricultural industry. The trip will provide an interesting insight into agriculture in an area where almost every input is imported. The Puerto Rico Chapter will host the project. They have been working hard to put together an amazing trip. Cost estimates are better than expected. Airfare (from Chicago to Aguadilla) is less than $500. You should be able to get by on less than $150 in for food. A non-refundable $150 housing deposit is required. The deposit will cover your lodging costs while in Puerto Rico (e.g. budget for about $800). Register Today! (68K DOC) Registration update: We've upped the participant cap from 12 to 30 participants. Alumni are welcome. Contact Brian Reuwee: reuwee@alphazeta.org or (636) 449-5090 for more information. Second project setAnother opportunity to participate in a National Service Project is available December 17-22.Alpha Zeta is returning to Louisiana for the third time to help farmers and rancher still recovering from hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. This will be the second time Alpha Zeta has been to Vermilion and Cameron Parish. With the help of the Louisiana Farm Bureau, several projects are being lined up for the anicipated 40-member crew. The group will work in and around Abbeville and Lake Charles. Bring your work clothes because we will get dirty. If you are interested, 24 spots remain available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Register now! Chapters who have not attended previous National Service Projects are encouraged to attend, and may be given preference. You are responsible for your travel to and from St. Louis, Mo. (Alpha Zeta National Office) as well as some meals. The Alpha Zeta Foundation and Louisiana Farm Bureau will provide transportation from St. Louis, lodging and most meals once the group arrives in Louisiana. There may be an opportunity to be reimbursed for your individual travel to and from St. Louis. South and Southeastern chapters may provide their own transportation, rather than coming to the National Office, then riding down to Louisiana. Register now | Gulf Coast Work Trip Event Page Origin of the National Service ProjectAlpha Zeta traveled to Southeastern Louisiana in January 2006 for five days to assist in the recovery from Hurricane Katrina. The Gulf Coast Work Trip involved 19 members from eight chapters across the country. Thanks to the Louisiana Farm Bureau, a second group traveled to Vermilion Parish in South central Louisiana, near Abbeville, December 17-22, 2006. The work trip is five days of hands-on, get dirty service aiding farmers and ranchers. In January, the group built a lot of fence, cleared brush and trash and constructed a shed. Participants worked on similar projects in December. Participants are responsible for travel to and from St. Louis and meals until we reach our destination. Other costs were covered by the Louisiana Farm Bureau and Alpha Zeta Foundation. Thirty two members attended the work trip in December. It was an amazing experience. Although plenty of work remains in Louisiana -- and another trip may be in the works, definative plans are underway for a National Service Project in Puerto Rico in January 2008. The trip will be about a week long with various service projects, tours of local agricultural industry and classroom workshops. If you are interested, please contact Brian Reuwee at reuwee@alphazeta.org or (636) 449-5090. Alumni are welcome to attend. Donations to support the National Service Project may be made to the Alpha Zeta Foundation; 16020 Swingley Ridge Road, Suite 300; Chesterfield, MO 63017.
