On Saturday, January 23rd, about 20 AZ members and rushes from the Cornell chapter visited Whittaker Farms in Whitney Point, NY. AZ sister Aubrey Whittaker gave a tour of the farm and explained a little about it. On the farm, they milk 400 cows, over 400 young animals (mostly Holsteins and some Jerseys too) on the farm and work about 1,000 acres of land. The members and rushes also got to see the freestall where the milking cows are kept, the milking parlor, the feed bunks and commodity shed where the feed for the cows is kept, the calving pen and the calf barn. A lot of good questions were asked, and although they were put to work feeding calves, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the farm.
We feel that a unique event such as this one, enables us to select the most agriculturally driven potential members to preserve the advancement of agriculture. This particular event was planned by our recruitment committee as a wat to stay connected to our agricultural roots, and demonstrate to our potential new members the importance of agriculture. One of the most challenging aspects was securing enough drivers for the event. The commitment of several members willing to drive our new members to the farm was needed to make this event as successful as it was. The main persons benefiting were the prospective members, emphasizing the importance of agriculture. However, this event also benefited current fraternity members by reconnecting them to something that is less seen on a college campus.
