UF Operation Catnip Service 4/15/12

Originally posted by Claire D. Page

Members of the Florida Chapter participated in the monthly Operation Catnip (OC) spay/neuter clinic. OC provides free spay/neuter, vaccines, and treatment for parasites to community cats from Alachua County, FL at no charge to the caregivers. Since 1998, OC has fixed over 31,000 cats. At monthly "spay days" over 200 cats are fixed in just hours thanks to a team of volunteers and the space for the clinic is donated by the UF College of Veterinary Medicine. Volunteers are assigned to a variety of tasks from check in to surgery preparation and recovery. This unique program gave our members an opportunity to gain some hands on experience in veterinary medicine. With many of our members pursuing medical degrees it gave them the chance to work first hand.

UF Pledge Class Pet Food/Toy Collection Service 4/7/12

Originally posted by Claire D. Page

The Florida Chapter's spring pledge class put together a pet food and toys drive for the Humane Society in Gainesville. The Humane Society is a non-profit organization that strives to eliminate euthanasia of healthy, treatable cats and dogs in the area where they work quickly to find them new homes. All services they provide are made possible by volunteers and donations such as ours. A few of the pledges were able to deliver the bags of food and toys to help the dogs and cats in need. The members and pledges were able to give just a little which can make a huge difference in the lives of these animals in the community around us.

UF Pledge Class Road Cleanup 4/2/12

Originally posted by Claire D. Page

The Florida Chapter's pledge class cleaned up our adopted road with the help of some of our members. The members and pledges that participated in the clean-up did not mind taking time out of their schedule to pick up the trash and get it off the street. We normally find at least one surprise item as we clean down the road! The road clean-up was planned for an evening to avoid the heat of the day. We collected a bunch of trash cleaning up the community and making the people in the area very happy...

Members of the Burlington area join together to watch local businesses and farmers race in giant pumpkins through Lake Champlain. Three Alpha Zeta members volunteered with the children's activity tent. Children could exchange tickets for crafts and snacks. Activities consisted of face painting, cookie/cupcake decorating, pumpkin painting, and other Halloween related crafts. This was an excellent opportunity for our chapter to interact with the younger members of our community. The pumpkin boat races were also very entertaining!

Corn Gleaning

Originally posted by Rebecca S. Terry

Three actives spent the afternoon of August 28th gleaning corn at a local farm. Early Bird Farm in Ithaca, NY was generous enough to allow their leftover corn to be harvested and donated to the Ithaca City School District. The corn will be served for lunch at Ithaca High school. The actives had a great time walking through the fields, and even turned it into a competition to see who could pick the most ears of corn!

We also hustled to clean up the tables and chairs from a wedding the previous night and helped them set up for a speaking group to come in later that night...

In late September, the brother of the Alpha Zeta Cook chapter spent the day volunteering at an event known as Duck Land at the Annual Raritan River Festival. Duck Land is a place set up for little kids. The brothers helped the children make sand art, paint pumpkins, create arts and crafts, pour spin art, play games, etc. Brothers also participated in the famous Duck Race where they purchased ducks and threw them into a canal via a giant egg on a crane. The ducks were then observed until someone’s duck floated past the finish line...

NC Cemetery Flag Setting

Originally posted by Ashley J. Kirby

The NC Chapter of Alpha Zeta has had an ongoing working relationship with Oakwood Cemetery in downtown Raleigh. Every semester we help them with general maintenance as well as other events such as the October Lantern Walk and Memorial Day Observance. This year six brothers donated their time on Saturday, May 5th, to help set out American Flags in front of gravestones. We also picked up trash and removed dead trees. The gentlemen at the cemetery are always very excited to see us and have our help!

NC K9-3K Dog Walk

Originally posted by Ashley J. Kirby

On Saturday April 21st, 4 brothers walked their dogs around Downtown Raleigh during the K9-3K dog walk. Our team raised $135 for the Wake County SPCA animal shelter. Donations support an animal shelter that was able to help over 16,200 animals last year. Last semester, many brothers volunteered in the shelter’s food pantry and enjoy working with the shelter. Each person raised at least $25 to participate in a great cause while socializing dogs. A couple team members even agreed to walk other people’s dogs. Brothers as well as the dogs enjoyed the event.
