UF Pledge Class Dinner Social 11/2/11

Originally posted by Claire D. Page

For the UF Chapter's Fall Pledge class social they planned a dinner at Leonardo's Pizza. A few members of the pledge class had never eaten there before, so it was a great experience for them to share. The dinner allowed members of the pledge class the opportunity to get to know one another and share stories of past professors and giving each other tips on how to survive different classes. It was nice for them to have dinner together because they have already made many new memories that they could laugh about over dinner. At the restaurant, everyone pays for their own food and drink but they had a lot of fun catching up with each other.

On October 13th, Alpha Zeta Cook Chapter participated in the University-wide Charity Bedrace. About 90 different clubs, fraternities and sororities from all across Rutgers entered the competition, with each team decorating a bed and having 4 members race it down one of the main streets on campus. Cook Chapter decorated their bed to represent our agricultural roots, and team members raced as a farmer and her pigs. The entry fee for the race was a collection of hats and gloves that would go to children in local schools. Cook Chapter collected about 40 sets of hats and gloves to donate to the cause.

UF Intramural Indoor Soccer Game 11/2/11

Members of the Florida Chapter came together for another night of fun and games for our intramural soccer game. Students enjoyed our two-week break but looked forward to see who our next opponent was for the night. The game was one of the most successful games we have had yet. The team had enough members to play and give everyone a break if they needed a substitution. The best part of the night had to be our rowdy fans cheering us on during a real close game!...

The Florida Chapter of Alpha Zeta cleaned up our adopted road with the help of our new pledges. The members and pledges that participated in the clean-up did not mind taking time out of their schedule to put the trash back where it belongs and off the street and were definitely surprised at what we find down the road! The road clean-up was planned for an evening to avoid the heat of the day...

Members came out to meet up with each other and catch up on what has been going on with each other out of class and our meetings.  Of course, this is best done while eating ice cream! Members chow down on frozen yogurt and icecream of all kinds while enjoying the company of members.

Cornell Chapter Visits an Active's Apple Farm

Did you know that New York is the second largest apple producing state after Washington? Members from the Cornell Chapter visited Van Acker farms this past weekend, an apple farm along Lake Ontario which is owned by active, Chelsea Van Acker. We left Friday afternoon and visited the Haunted Hayrides of Greater Rochester (owned by a past active) and then went to the apple farm on Saturday morning. We were able to talk with her family about different parts of the apple industry including labor and how the new e-verify system will effect them, planting, pruning, harvesting, marketing, and everything in between. Most of the apples on this particular farm are sold to Motts to be made into applesauce, rather than being sold for fresh market...

As part of our new member education process, the pledges planned a sibling olympics event for the active members on 10/15. The event was held in the afternoon and included a pumpkin carving contest and a scarecrow building contest (pictured), among other events. This is the second semester we've done this event and is something we hope to continue it in the future as it is a great way to bring both active members and new members together in a fun setting.
