North Carolina Chapter End of the year Potluck

Originally posted by Madeline N. Dabolt

Starting at 6:00 on April 27th before our last meeting of the semester, we all joined in Weaver Shop for a potluck.  Each brother brought a covered dish to share with everyone.  We had everything from cheesy mashed potatoes, homemade macaroni,  and baked ham to Bojangles chicken. There were some great desserts too. There were 45 brothers in attendance, several alumni, and 1 of our advisor's were there.  It was a great time to relax before the beginning of final exams and a great opportunity for fellowship with those graduating in May.

Swing-a-Thon

On April 12th, twenty of our brothers participated in Sigma Alpha sorority's annual Swing-a-Thon.  This event took place all day on the brickyard.  The participants payed $10 to swing for ten minutes.  The money that was raised by many of the organizations at NCSU and students went to NC Farm Bureau's Ag in the classroom.  The money raised is used to give mini-grants to K-8th grade teachers to incorporate agriculture into their curriculum.  Overall, the event was a big success and a great opportunity for the students to support agriculture and the future of our society.

On April 8th, North Carolina State University hosted their annual Relay For Life on Lee Field.  18 of our brothers went out and supported Cancer research in hopes to raise money.  As an on-site fundraiser we had Cornhole boards put out so people could pay to play.  The event did not last too long into the night like it was supposed to because of bad weather.  By 11 o'clock we had to take down everything and leave.  Everyone that participated in this event had a blast even when it started to rain.

As a chapter we took 22 brothers to the National Agriculture Leadership Conference in St. Louis, MO.  When we arrived on Thursday we had registration during the day to receive our items for the conference, followed by a welcome reception that night.  During the welcome reception we had dinner, icebreakers, banner contest, and an overview of the scheduled plans for the conference.  On Friday, we started off with an internship/career fair where students got to talk with different companies about available jobs and internships.  Later, we broke out into our different agriculture tours which included animal science, plant science, and slow urban food.  Friday night we went to the city museum where we also had dinner.  On Saturday, there were breakout sessions all day until 4:15 and we concluded the night with the banquet.  At the banquet we had dinner, a guest speaker, and awards were presented.  The North Carolina Chapter came home with Chancellor, Censor, and Scribe of the year.  We also won the banner contest against the other chapters.  Altogether, we had a very successful trip and many great memories were made.

Throughout Agricultural Awareness week, Alpha Zeta puts on numerous events to involve people in a celebration of agriculture.  On Monday we planned  Agriculture Olympics with CALs faculty.  This event included seed spitting; a tractor race and an egg toss among the participants. Collegiate 4H sponsored a lunch of pizza.  On Tuesday, we had an Alumni breakfast for faculty from 7:30-11. During this time the faculties were invited to eat and socialize with the officers and brothers in Alpha Zeta.

Southern Farm Show

Originally posted by Lauren K. Mabry

On Friday Feb. 4th, at 1pm seven Alpha Zeta brothers met at the fairgrounds to go to the Southern Farm Show.  Admission to the Southern Farm show is free.  The Southern Farm show is a trade show showcasing different types of agricultural equipment and companies.  There were many different types of tractors for us to see.  They had a tobacco harvester, hay bailers, fertilize spreaders, and bushhogs.  They also had different types of cattle equipment that was demonstrated.  They also had cattle dog demonstrations and demonstrated how to properly vaccinate cattle.  Different companies that could one day employ us were also there so it was also a great time to network.  After walking through the trade show, we went to dinner and then came back to the mule pull held at the horse complex.  We all had a lot of fun and it was a great opportunity for us to see some of the latest technology in agriculture.
