The Florida Chapter of Alpha Zeta holds a series of rush events each semester to allow potential members the opportunity to interact with current members and find out a little bit more about what Alpha Zeta is at UF. The week starts out with an informational meeting letting the prospective members learn about our history, our pledging process, and why they should join. The rush events for this year consisted of our annual event bat watching with the Chancellor, and a few new events like beach volleyball and bowling....

UF Air Potato Round Up Service 1/28/12

Members of the Florida chapter grabbed bags and gloves to remove one of Gainesville’s most threatening plant species- the air potato. The theme of the event this year was "Beware of the Dark Side Darth Tater” and the forest was with our members on this particular morning. This annual event is attended by hundreds of Gainesville residents who spend the day working in local parks and on the University of Florida campus to remove the invasive plant, which really does resemble a potato. This year, 5700 lbs of air potatoes were collected from all over the city, as well as 95 bags of trash. AZ members felt great about helping the Gainesville community, and celebrated after at the Morningside Nature Center, enjoying food, music, and brotherhood.

UF TGI Friday's Back to School Social 1/20/12

Some of the Florida Chapter spent their Friday night where other than T.G.I. Friday's! Members of the chapter took a break from studying and attended dinner allowing them the opportunity to catch up on what happened over the winter break. The dinner also gave them the chance to compare classes and professors, sharing stories and giving each other tips on how to survive some of the difficult classes....

UF Scavenger Hunt 1/17/12

The Florida Chapter started off the new semester with a little fun and games. At our first member meeting of the semester our social chair Kaylie Smith put together a scavenger hunt in order to get our members to know each other a little better. We started off the night taking turns introducing ourselves to allow our newest members the opportunity to put names to faces. We were then broken up into 7 teams that had to complete and take pictures of a variety of tasks such as "Tebowing" with the Tebow statue and arm wrestling with a stranger, which took place all across campus. Members sprinted out of the meeting room to start the first task of the semester!...

Cook Chapter Brotherhood Retreat

On Sunday, January 22nd, the brothers of the Cook Chapter gathered for their annual Brotherhood Retreat. The retreat was a time to relax and have fun with fellow members and discuss goals for the semester. 55 members attended the retreat, which started out with a game of Apples to Apples. Members also worked on posters and videos for recruitment, which starts over the next few weeks. The retreat concluded with a discussion session where members voiced their opinions about things they would like to see changed and improved over the coming semester.

New Executive Board Installation

On the first Brother Meeting of the semester, Cook Chapter took the time to recognize the past year's Executive Board. Each old member ritually handed over their power to the new Executive Board and each new member said a small speech about the wonderful things that our Executive Board has done in the past year. As a present from the brotherhood, each departing member got their respective Alpha Zeta official executive board charm. We welcome the new year and cannot wait to see what our new leaders have in store for us!

The Florida Chapter of Alpha Zeta hosted the National Service Project for the second time. 10 brothers came from Florida and across the country to help in the Orlando area. The trip was an opportunity for members to work hard and make a difference in the lives of people we encountered or helped. The 10 members who came to Orlando worked extremely hard and made a huge difference in the lives of disadvantaged people in the Central Florida area!

UF Cards for Pediatric Caner Patients Service 12/1/11

The Florida Chapter joined up with Friends for Life who represents the annual Hearts for the Holidays event. The event encourages UF students, faculty and staff to make holiday cards to pediatric cancer patients who will spend the holidays in the hospital. They attempt to send cards to one hospital in every state. Hearts for the Holidays gives university students and our members the chance to provide support for children fighting cancer. Our chapter benefited by coming together in order to make the lives of others better during the time of year where hope is in the area. The cards were delivered to the Friends for Life representatives to distribute to the hospitals.

UF White Elephant Gift Exchange Social 11/29/11

At our last meeting of the fall semester members of the Florida Chapter participated in a White Elephant gift exchange. The rules are pretty simple: everyone brings a wrapped gift valued at $5-$10. We number slips of paper 1-however many people we have, and each person takes a number from a hat. Whoever gets #1 goes to the front and unwraps a gift. Number 2 may unwrap their own gift or steal the gift of number 1. We continue until everyone has a gift! A gift may be stolen only 3 times before it is frozen, and if your gift is stolen, you unwrap another! But remember there are no direct steal backs! Everyone that participates has a lot of fun and goes home with a unique present that one of their fellow members picked out for the holiday season.

UF Fall Initiation 11/28/11

The Florida Chapter had the amazing opportunity to initiate 5 new members into our chapter. The night was a rainy and chilly night but that would not stop our excitement or gratitude to the members, staff, and initiates that came out. The ceremony was a traditional set up allowing the initiates an inside into what we were founded on and what we strive towards as an organization. After the ceremony we joined in congratulating the newest members of our chapter with dinner where they sat with their sponsors, our advisors, and honored guest Dr. Robert McCleery....
