Oakwood Cemetery Clean-up

Oakwood Cemetery Clean-up

Originally posted by Lauren K. Mabry

The NC Chapter of Alpha Zeta has had an ongoing working relationship with Oakwood Cemetery in downtown Raleigh.  Every year we help them with general maintenance and with their lantern walk.  This year eight members donated their time on Saturday, October 24th, to help with the Memory House.  We picked up trash, trimmed shrubbery, and helped remove a dead tree.  The gentlemen at the cemetery are always very excited to see us and have our help!

The Fall 2010 Pledge Class participated in a 5K walk/run to raise money for two different organizations: The Mary Kay Foundation which helps support finding a cure for breast, uterine, cervical and ovarian cancers, and Peaceful Paths, which helps provide grants to women's shelters who have suffered from domestic violence. A few of the pledge class members were able to benefit from this event by getting to know each other during their walk/run while helping out the community. A group of pledges got together and each paid $15 in advance to participate in the walk/run.

Florida Fall '10 pledge Stuff the Bus Service 11-06-10

The Fall 2010 Pledge Class contributed to the project as a means of service to our Gainesville community. Members of the pledge class met up to bring canned goods and various other items to a central location (bus) that was destined for the underserved population in Gainesville. This counted as one of the pledge's two required service events and helped bring the future brothers closer together as well as helped individuals in our community who are in need.

Florida Fall '10 pledge Trick or Treat for the Troops Service 10-22-10

This project called for members of the Fall 2010 Pledge Class to collect canned goods and other nonperishable items to send to US troops in Afghanistan. The pledge class chose to participate in order to give back to US soldiers who are risking their lives for our country. The pledge class also benefited from taking part in a campus-wide service opportunity. The pledges decided they should each bring in at least 5 cans/items in order to participate and collected them at one central location to then donate to the campus-wide collection.

Stream Cleanup

Stream Cleanup

Originally posted by Lauren K. Mabry

Our Service chair contacted campus maintenance to see if there was anything that we could do in order to help make our campus a little more beautiful.  On May 4, 2010, nine brothers of the North Carolina Chapter of Alpha Zeta met at 2pm to clean-up a stream that runs through campus.  We started at one end of campus armed with trash bags and rubber gloves and picked up trash along the stream all the way to the other side of campus.  The stream runs along a trail that many joggers and bikers frequent along with several of our members.  Hopefully next time they will have a cleaner walk.

2010 Regional Boy Scout Camporee

Originally posted by Lauren K. Mabry

On Saturday morning, April 24, we had eight Alpha Zeta brothers travel to the 2010 Regional Boy Scout Camporee in Kinston, North Carolina.  Once we arrived we helped set up the BB gun ranges and then helped train the scouts on the proper way to use a BB gun. We also helped check-in the scouts, sign off on the requirements for badges, and we helped pass out the badges.  We wore AZ t-shirts and met several people that were there with their sons that were AZ alumni.  The alumni were very glad to see us actively involved in the community and shared with us some of their favorite AZ memories.

On March 6, five members of the Puerto Rico Chapter walked to the community of Mayaguez Terrace.  They picked up the recycling bags of the residents in the area that they left in their entrance ways.  They then took the bags to the designated area to be separated by numbers and to calculate ho9w much they collected.  This activity promoted the importance of recycling among our members and in the community.
