NC Sweet Potato Gleaning

NC Sweet Potato Gleaning

The North Carolina Chapter participates in the College of Agriculture and Life Science’s Agri-Life Council with other groups within the college. The council invited brothers to participate in a service project with Wake Interfaith Food Shuttle on November 9th. Four brothers traveled to Johnston County to glean sweet potatoes. We collected leftover potatoes that were not picked up with tractors. We enjoyed digging around the roots for over two hours and collected about 100 pounds of potatoes per person.  It was surprising how relaxing the dirt was and we really enjoyed the project which helps feed hungry people. The event was a great opportunity to interact with students from other organizations within the college.

One of NC State University’s most treasured landmarks is the Free Expression Tunnel under a railroad track that runs through the middle of our campus. Students are free to paint anything they would like in this tunnel and it is also the site of campus events and celebrations. The Union Activities Board decided to have a party outside the tunnel after the polls closed on Election Day in order to create a feeling of campus unity. The event also promoted positive artwork in the tunnel...

Run for RAH

On Sunday, October 28th, Cook Chapter participated in the annual charity run (and fun walk for those who just wanted to participate) for Rutgers Against Hunger (RAH). In this event, you can either compete in the 5k run or simply donate and take the leisurely 1 mile walk around Busch Campus. The run was a USATF sanctioned Grand Prix 5K and prizes were given out to the fastest runners, and the groups who had the most people participate as well as those who donated the most food. Our chapter had 12 brothers, alumni and new members participate. The food donated to RAH was used to fill pantries all over New Jersey and benefited countless hungry families. $6000 was collected and donated.

UF Earth Day Service and Social 4/22/12

Originally posted by Claire D. Page

The Florida Chapter celebrated Earth Day by giving back to the community. Members cleaned up our adopted road with the help of some of our newest additions. The members that participated in the clean-up did not mind taking time out of their schedule, as the last 3 days of classes came closer and made graduation ever closer for some or the next year of school for others, to pick up the trash and get it off the street. The road clean-up was planned for the morning to avoid the heat of the day and to be completed when the Horticulture Departments Earth Day event started...

As a part of our compromise with the community and the environment the past September 15, 2012 members of Alpha Zeta, Puerto Rico Chapter, in collaboration with many other associations of our Agriculture Faculty we were participating in the International Coastal Cleanup Day. It’s an event that is promoted by Ocean Conservancy, an entity that educated the people implementing the importance of protecting the oceans and its wildlife. It’s an activity that gives us awareness about the importance of maintaining the coast free of trash. It was also a socializing activity in where members of different associations shared and worked together for our environment.

NC Stream Cleanup

NC Stream Cleanup

On Saturday September 8th, six brothers met to pick up trash around a stream that runs through NCSU’s campus. This is a project that the North Carolina Chapter usually participates in once a semester to aid university maintenance. Our service coordinator organized the project and supplied the group with gloves and trash bags. At 10am, brothers cleaned up an area that many joggers and bikers frequent for about an hour. It was a great morning to be outside. Brothers enjoyed spending time together while beautifying our campus.

We contributed $250 to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Ambassadors, who host the event. After the race, participants enjoyed games, music, snacks and NCSU ice cream. The Fun Run was a great opportunity to get involved in campus events and support other organizations within the college. We hope to participate in the event next year.

NC Campus tour

Originally posted by Madeline N. Dabolt

On Saturday March 31st, 10 brothers met in the afternoon to give a group of 40 high school students a tour of NC States campus. We started off at one of the Dormitories to give them a sneak peak to what a typical room looks like. Then we headed to central campus to give them the low down of the buildings and what exists there. After that we went to the Court of the Carolinas where we witnessed a Quidditch tournament going on. From there we went to the Bell Tower and passed Holiday Hall to Reynolds Coliseum. We finally got ice cream at our creamery on campus and went to the bookstore for the kids to buy things if they wanted. The group had a great time and learned a lot. The point of the trip was to show them that it was possible to attend college and there are a lot of opportunities to get them to college also.
