This past weekend, the Florida Chapter experienced Habitat for Humanity for the first time! 4 of our members went out at Saturday morning to help rebuild a house for a family in need. It was a great and extremely rewarding experience. Our members could see that they were having a huge impact on one family. We also learned some carpentry skills on the way, too!

Beginning on November 18, 2013, Alpha Zeta-Cal Epsilon held a 50/50 fundraiser with proceeds going to Fresno State’s food bank, the Bulldog Pantry. On December 12th members of the Cal Epsilon Chapter volunteered at Occu-Med, a global healthcare firm, that provides Christmas presents for families in the community. Members helped organize and wrap presents that would later be given to 100 different families. Today, members of the Florida Chapter went out to our road in Gainesville to perform a road clean up. NC Operation Christmas Child

This Fall, the North Carolina Chapter of Alpha Zeta decided to again participate in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child program. Brothers were eager to participate. The service committee sent out information about the boxes, label and shipping fees so that brothers could turn in boxes at our regular business meetings on November 13th or by Thanksgiving. Many brothers filled empty shoe or plastic boxes to send to children around the world. Boxes could be designed for boys or girls ages 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Items in the boxes included toys, school supplies, hygiene items, hard candy, t-shirts, and personal notes. Brothers paid a $7 shipping fee for their box. The service committee delivered the boxes to a drop-off location so that the boxes could meet the National Collection Week deadline. This project is a great way to spread joy during the holiday season and put a smile on a child’s face

On October 31st ten brothers dressed up in costume and headed to a local neighboring in Cary to collect cans for the North Carolina food pantry. On Friday, November 22nd, the Cal Epsilon chapter at Fresno State dropped off their donations of canned food items to the Wesley United Methodist Church.  The donations came from members as a part of Fresno State's Canned Food Initiative.  Fresno State's goal was to donate over 300 pounds of canned food campus-wide to benefit the El Dorado Park community, a community near Fresno State that struggles with poverty and hunger.

Last weekend, the Florida Chapter took part in the Edible Plant Project at Siembra Farms. The Edible Plant Project is a nonprofit mission run by volunteers that strive to promote edible landscape and local food production. The Edible Plant Project’s goal is to create alternatives to the unsustainable food system in this country. When we arrived at the farm, we were separated into 2 different groups. One group picked sweet potatoes, while the other group tended to the green house. In the green house, we picked out the weeds, cleaned seeds, and planted sugarcane. All in all, the Florida Chapter was able to devote our time in a fun and farm friendly way!

Making Strides for Breast Cancer 5k

This was a fun run/walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise funds for Breast Cancer research. The chapter participated by helping with walker/runner registration over the course of several hours on a Sunday morning. The chapter volunteered because we felt that this cause was more than worthy of our time and efforts. Those that participated walked away knowing that they had contributed, even in a small way, to finding a cure for cancer. Prior to the event, our chapter designated those that would participate as well as drivers for transportation to and from the event.
