Cook Chapter Runs the Big Chill

On Saturday, December 10th, the Cook Chapter of Alpha Zeta participated in the Big Chill, an annual 5k run/walk that takes place at Rutgers. The entry fee for the race was a new, unopened toy. The Alpha Zeta team consisted of 44 members, both members of the fraternity as well as friends and family. Everyone on the team ran or walked the course wearing reindeer antlers, and the chapter advisor, Dr. Clark, walked the event dressed as Santa Claus. The event is one of the biggest charity races that takes place at Rutgers; last year over 8,000 toys were collected for donation. The Alpha Zeta team won an award for being the fraternity/sorority team with the most participants. The event was a great way for the chapter to bond and participate in a campus-wide event.

On November 10th, the Scholarship Committee of the Cook Chapter hosted a lunch with Dr. Bruce Clarke, an Alpha Zeta alumnus and professor of Plant Biology and Pathology at Rutgers. Dr. Clarke answered questions regarding the graduate school application process, and gave members tips on writing to prospective graduate school advisors. He also talked about what the Cook Campus community  and Alpha Zeta were like many years ago, and members discussed changes occurring on campus and Alpha Zeta's role in keeping a sense of community in the ever-changing Rutgers landscape. Members enjoyed getting the chance to talk to a professor and alumnus that they do not get to see very often.

Cook Chapter Has Pizza with a Faculty Advisor

Originally posted by Lisa K. Izzo

On October 11th, the Scholarship Committee of the Cook Chapter hosted the second dinner with Alpha Zeta faculty on Cook Campus. Members met up with Dr. George Clark, a chapter advisor and professor in the Human Ecology Department, at a local pizza place. Dr. Clark talked about how he got to where he is now. Members learned some fun facts about their advisor, such as how he had originally wanted to be a dentist and that his favorite food is pizza (hence the restaurant choice). Members enjoyed getting to know one of their advisors better over a casual dinner.

On Sunday, November 13th, 6 members of the Cook Chapter participated in the NJ Tough Mudder, a 12 mile obstacle course. One group ran the course in blue and yellow tie dye shirts to represent Alpha Zeta. The training for this course started back in early spring. The team members would go on runs and work out together for the months beforehand. On the course, many of the obstacles required teamwork to get each person through, making the chapter members closer. Some of the obstacles included large wooden walls that the team had to get over, monkey bars, mountains of mud and hay, cargo nets, and a half pipe that participants had to run up while others helped them reach the top. Other chapter members came to watch and support the AZ participants through the course. Each participant paid an entry fee, with part of the proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps warriors returning from the battlefield.

On Saturday, November 12th, Cook Chapter held Big/Little Olympics, which takes place each semester. About 20 members attended to play games and for bonding between the pledges and the brotherhood. Games included Ninja, The Blob, Dodgeball, and assorted relay races, as well as a game called Tanks, where big/little pairs worked in teams. One was blindfolded and the team had to develop a system of communication using only 5 words (cat, dog, cow, horse, chicken) to help the blindfolded member pick up and throw balls of newspaper. The event also had a costume contest, where big/little pairs dressed up as characters from movies.

The week before Halloween, on October 23rd,  about ten brothers went together to Battleview Orchards for apple and pumpkin picking. Apples later became pies for the brotherhood, as well as a great many more delicious dishes. In the midst of midterm season, it was a great break from all of the studying, and a fun way to get into the Halloween mood.

Cook Chapter Pledge Project 10/22

Cook Chapter Pledge Project 10/22

Cook Chapter took a field trip to the Rutgers Gardens to clean the bamboo forest. Every semester, we head over and shovel and rake mulch into a better path, weed, cut down dead and dangerous branches and help the Gardens in any way they need. This time our clean up also included planting new trees along the street to reduce erosion. Everyone had a great time and we all managed to whistle while we worked (and sing Disney songs as well), making the manual labor much more enjoyable.

Cook AZ Applebees Social

Cook AZ Applebees Social

On September 28th, as part of rush week, Cook AZ brought the new potential pledges to Applebees to socialize and get to know each other and the brothers better. Mostly everyone ordered half price appetizers or deserts, but everyone had fun running around trying to meet all of the new Sigma class. A lot of the brothers used this opportunity to see if they clicked with any of the pledges, to decide if they wanted a Little this semester or not. It was a great turn out and everyone went home happy.
