Responsible Drinking Happy Hour, Founders Day and Hurricane Sandy

Responsible Drinking Happy Hour, Founders Day and Hurricane Sandy

Cook chapter worked with our campus Deans and our own Alpha Zeta Alumni Association to Co-Sponsor Responsible Drinking Happy Hour on Friday November 2nd. The event was unfortunately postponed by Hurricane Sandy, and was rescheduled for the 9th. Cook chapter used this event to celebrate Founders Day, while promoting responsible drinking. Anyone over 21 who arrived received a wristband, and that wristband allowed them to buy exactly one alcoholic drink per hour, encouraging casual socialization without overuse. Free food and non-alcoholic beverages were also provided. Our chapter also sold shirts and buttons to raise money for those devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The event was a huge success and we were able to raise over $250 for Sandy Relief.

NC Sends Cards to Troops

Originally posted by Ashley J. Kirby

Ten brothers of the North Carolina Chapter sent at least two Christmas cards for troops. The service committee sent out information about Operation Christmas Cards requirements so that brothers could turn in cards at our regular business meeting on November 14th. Cards were filled with encouraging words to thank soldiers for their service and sacrificing their time over the holidays. Brothers enjoyed decorating the cards and envelopes. The service committee mailed the letters to meet the November 25th deadline. This project is a great way for our chapter to support and show appreciation for the sacrifices of America’s amazing servicemen and women.

NC Sends Operation Christmas Child Boxes

Originally posted by Ashley J. Kirby

When brothers of the North Carolina Chapter heard about Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child program, they were eager to participate. The service committee sent out information about the boxes, label and shipping fees so that brothers could turn in boxes at our regular business meetings on November 7th and 14th. Twenty brothers filled empty shoe or plastic boxes to send to children around the world. Boxes could be designed for boys or girls ages 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Items in the boxes included toys, school supplies, hygiene items, hard candy, t-shirts, and personal notes. Brothers paid a $7 shipping fee for their box. The service committee delivered the boxes to a drop-off location so that the boxes could meet the National Collection Week deadline of November 19th. This project is a great way to spread joy during the holiday season and put a smile on a child’s face.

The North Carolina Chapter participates in the College of Agriculture and Life Science’s Agri-Life Council with other groups within the college. The council invited brothers to participate in a service project with Wake Interfaith Food Shuttle on November 9th. Four brothers traveled to Johnston County to glean sweet potatoes. We collected leftover potatoes that were not picked up with tractors. We enjoyed digging around the roots for over two hours and collected about 100 pounds of potatoes per person.  It was surprising how relaxing the dirt was and we really enjoyed the project which helps feed hungry people. The event was a great opportunity to interact with students from other organizations within the college.

One of NC State University’s most treasured landmarks is the Free Expression Tunnel under a railroad track that runs through the middle of our campus. Students are free to paint anything they would like in this tunnel and it is also the site of campus events and celebrations. The Union Activities Board decided to have a party outside the tunnel after the polls closed on Election Day in order to create a feeling of campus unity. The event also promoted positive artwork in the tunnel...

Historic Oakwood Cemetery in downtown Raleigh invites the North Carolina Chapter to help setup their annual Lantern Walk around Halloween. During the evening event, guests have the opportunity to walk through a path of luminaries through the Confederate Memorial section and watch re-enactments of civil war life in the North Carolina. All proceeds of the event go towards restoration of the cemetery. Volunteering with the cemetery is a way to pay tribute to the soldiers that lost their lives in the Civil War, while learning some history about the war and the impact of agriculture during the war...

Run for RAH

Run for RAH

Originally posted by Aubrey B. Weibel

On Sunday, October 28th, Cook Chapter participated in the annual charity run (and fun walk for those who just wanted to participate) for Rutgers Against Hunger (RAH). In this event, you can either compete in the 5k run or simply donate and take the leisurely 1 mile walk around Busch Campus. The run was a USATF sanctioned Grand Prix 5K and prizes were given out to the fastest runners, and the groups who had the most people participate as well as those who donated the most food. Our chapter had 12 brothers, alumni and new members participate. The food donated to RAH was used to fill pantries all over New Jersey and benefited countless hungry families. $6000 was collected and donated.

The Florida Chapter of Alpha Zeta cleaned up our adopted road. Three road cleanups were completed over the course of three weeks. The members that participated in the road cleanups were very willing to clean up our community despite the many bugs that attacked us along the way! Not only was it hot most of the days, it started to drizzle one of the days. The service chair provided all the materials needed to clean. Among those materials were orange reflective safety vests. Wearing our orange reflective safety vests made us feel official! We put recyclables in one bag and trash in another...
