UF Pledge Class Wendy's Fundraiser 11/21/11

Originally posted by Claire D. Page

The Fall Pledge class of the Florida Chapter held a fundraiser at Wendy's from 5-7 p.m. where they receive a certain percentage of the profits from the night. Members and pledges came out to meet up with each other for a laid back dinner and a chocolate frosty. What is better than friends and a frosty? Members enjoyed burgers and chicken nuggets while immersed in the company of our members.

Members came out to support one of our own and the mastermind behind the festival, Blaire Colvin. Students came out on a beautiful November afternoon for food, fun, and games. The festival gave students at the university an opportunity to take a look into the agronomy program and meet with the faculty, staff, and students that make agronomy great!...

The third annual UF AZ Pancake Breakfast held at Applebee's 8-10 a.m. before a 1 p.m., home football game against Furman. We pre-sold tickets for $5, and then it's was $7 at the door. The breakfast includes 2 pancakes, 2 sausage links, scrambled eggs, butter, syrup, and coffee, orange juice, or water to drink! Members take shifts busing tables, serving, cooking, and cleaning. Our fundraiser chair Gernide Zamor planned this with the help of our treasurer Libby Weber putting a $200 deposit on the restaurant and supplies. We worked hard to get the word out about the breakfast giving members tickets to sell and sending an email out over the faculty/alumni listserv and creating a facebook event to get it out to our friends!...

On Sunday, November 13th, 6 members of the Cook Chapter participated in the NJ Tough Mudder, a 12 mile obstacle course. One group ran the course in blue and yellow tie dye shirts to represent Alpha Zeta. The training for this course started back in early spring. The team members would go on runs and work out together for the months beforehand. On the course, many of the obstacles required teamwork to get each person through, making the chapter members closer. Some of the obstacles included large wooden walls that the team had to get over, monkey bars, mountains of mud and hay, cargo nets, and a half pipe that participants had to run up while others helped them reach the top. Other chapter members came to watch and support the AZ participants through the course. Each participant paid an entry fee, with part of the proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps warriors returning from the battlefield.

Brothers donated money to participate in the walk, which Elijiah's Promise would use to provide food for those in need. The walk was also a great bonding experience for brothers, allowing them to walk together, play word games, and talk about new ideas and projects for next semester.

Games included Ninja, The Blob, Dodgeball, and assorted relay races, as well as a game called Tanks, where big/little pairs worked in teams. One was blindfolded and the team had to develop a system of communication using only 5 words (cat, dog, cow, horse, chicken) to help the blindfolded member pick up and throw balls of newspaper. The event also had a costume contest, where big/little pairs dressed up as characters from movies.

During our initiation weekend at the beginning of November, our chapter participated in Adopt-a-Highway which we do every semester during our initiation weekend. It is the first community service event the new members have the opportunity to participate in officially. Fourteen members were able to participate this semester. We have a 2 mile stretch about 10min. from campus that we are assigned to clean. The event always ends with a lunch at a restaurant in Ithaca.

During the first weekend in November, the Cornell Chapter held our weekend Initiation event. Because our chapter is both a social and honors fraternity, our members are first initiated into our chapter, and then into the National Organization. Our current new members will be Nationally Initiated in the spring semester. Our chapter initiation is a weekend-long event that starts on Friday evening and concludes on Sunday morning. It includes a night-long ceremony on Friday night, social events during the day on Saturday including watching our chapter movie over dinner, and a full house clean-up on Sunday morning.

This was the second out of four seminars for the newly inducted class 13. This was the diversity seminar which focused on strengthening our diversity skills through pluralism. We attended a prayer session at a local Mosque, we ate at a Chinese restaurant, had a guest speaker from the GLBT Speakers Bureau, had the author of the freshman BBC book meet with us, we volunteered at an AIDS walk in downtown Columbus, and we had a speaker from the diversity department spend a whole day with us practicing diversity activities. The chapter benefits from this annual seminar by opening the participants eyes to the differences in the world...
