Did you know that New York is the second largest apple producing state after Washington? Members from the Cornell Chapter visited Van Acker farms this past weekend, an apple farm along Lake Ontario which is owned by active, Chelsea Van Acker. We left Friday afternoon and visited the Haunted Hayrides of Greater Rochester (owned by a past active) and then went to the apple farm on Saturday morning. We were able to talk with her family about different parts of the apple industry including labor and how the new e-verify system will effect them, planting, pruning, harvesting, marketing, and everything in between. Most of the apples on this particular farm are sold to Motts to be made into applesauce, rather than being sold for fresh market. This opportunity was a great way for almost 15 members of our chapter to not only learn about one of NY's largest agricultural industries, but to be able to see an industry directly related to one of our members.
