11 New Members Initiated!

Originally posted by Emmaline A. Long

A couple weeks ago, 11 new members were initiated into the Cornell Chapter, The weekend which consists of bonding activities, community service, and teaching of chapter traditions like songs, attracts alumni and is a weekend everyone looks forward to. The weekend concludes a 9 week long new member education process where new members participate in weekly events to learn Cornell, Alpha Zeta, and Chapter history and traditions. This initiation was unique for us because chapter initiation included a National Initiation (separate because we are a social fraternity also) on Saturday after where 3 Associate members were initiated in addition to new members.

UF Pledge Spring '11 Puppy Hill Farm Rescue at Petsmart Service 3-27-11

This event was planned by Corinne Oliphant, the pledge class service chair. At Petsmart the Puppy Hill Farm Animal Rescue group brings dogs and cats that are available for adoption. The 11 in attendance brought the animals in after they walked them. Pledges and members were told to talk to the customers and try to persuade them to adopt a pet. Before finishing the service event, the dogs were walked again. It was a great time spent with the animals and advocating for their adoption!

This service event was planned by our spring semester pledge class but was opened to all members as a service event requirement. Two Tails Ranch is a "training, medical, breeding and retirement facility for hundreds of elephants and exotic felines for over 20 years." They are revamping their main barn and some back pens so we helped with general maintenance and landscaping. This was truly an incredible experience for the 10 members and several pledges that were able to attend to be able to interact with elephants and will hopefully be a service project the UF chapter of AZ will carry on in the following years.

Every semester the pledge class plans a potluck for the pledge class and all of the members. This semester's theme was Southern Comfort. Potluck is always greatly anticipated since everyone that attends has a lot of fun, gets to dress up according to theme, and share delicious food! A testament to how fun these potlucks are is that 29 members and two alumni attended, not including those in attendance from the pledge class!

The UF chapter of AZ was represented at this year's Alpha Zeta national conference by our student advisor, fundraising chair, national service project chair, scribe, chronicler, chancellor, social chair, and treasurer. Our chronicler, Claire Page, won the Centennial Scholarship and Chronicler of the Year. Charlie Doyle won Treasurer of the Year. Rikki Schwarz won Member of the Year. She was the lead director for the National Service Project hosted by the University of Florida that took place nearby in Orlando, FL. As a whole, the Florida Chapter won Service to Community and New Member Development! Even though a handful of the members could go to St. Louis, the Florida chapter is greatly supported by all our members, and we are proud of our accomplishments. The yearly national conference is a fantastic way to meet and make friendships with AZ chapters from around the country. Every year our chapter greatly looks forward to going to/hearing about the activities of the conference and meeting new and old friends.

Habitat for Humanity's annual campus race! The route circles some of the busiest parts of campus, passing by the O'Connell Center, the Swamp, Turlington Plaza, and the Reitz Union. Planning involved our service chair, Kaitlyn Summerfield, making sure those that wanted to walk/run were registered, paid, and knew where to meet on campus. Our nine members that participated benefited by getting good exercise, socializing, and helping to support Alachua Habitat for Humanity who's goal is to provide safe, decent, affordable homes for families in need.

This is our third year planning a Family Day. Our social chair, who is Dalal Hares this year, plans it every spring semester. This year we met for brunch outside in a courtyard among our Entomoloy buildings before heading out to Single Vision, a non-profit endangered species educational facility located in Melrose, FL. Single Vision aims to prevent tigers from becoming extinct from poaching and habitat destruction. Next was a visit to the Butterfly Rainforest, which is a part of UF's  Florida Museum of Natural History. It includes a four-story, outdoor screened enclosure with waterfalls, a walking trail, tropical plants and hundreds of live butterflies. Families got a break for lunch and some rest before dinner at a local restaurant with Dr. George Burgess as a speaker. Dr. Burgess is a part of UF's Ichthyology department and a national expert on sharks appearing on countless news programs and the Discovery Channel.

Every semester with our new pledge class the pledge master matches up each pledge (the "little") with a member (the "big"). This is our second year theming it as a "pair party." This year our pledge master, Sara Molloy, had the bigs and littles dress in pairs such as Charlie Brown and Snoopy, an Easter bunny and an Easter egg, Batman and Robin, and many more! When pledges and members arrived at the event they had to find their pair/match thus revealing their big or little. Any member could attend, even if they did not have a little. Everyone looks forward to initiating a new pledge class each semester and this is just one of the many events that forms a bond for future UF Alpha Zeta members!

UF Ropes Course 3-20-11

Our AZ Chancellor, Kelin Maciejewski, headed up a bonding activity that took place at UF's Lake Wauburg Ropes Course. Planning included reserving the course months in advance and having the 14 members attended sign paperwork ahead of time. It started with "get to know you warm-up activities." Then there was a low alpine course where everyone had to work as a team to get everyone across a two foot high log-course with various obstacles and team problem solving activities. Next everyone had to get over a 12 foot high wall with no ropes and just people trying to push/pull people over the wall. Last, people had the chance to climb a 45 foot high alpine tower with various obstacles including nets, hanging logs, wobbly platforms, ladders, and rocks. Everyone had a blast. It was a ton of fun and it made a lot of people feel better connected as a group.

Empty Bowls is an organization that helps feed the homeless. Our service chair, Kaitlyn Summerfield, planned for the UF chapter of AZ to go to the Arts and Crafts Center in our student union to help this organization and our community while exercising our creativity in painting the ceramic pieces at the same time! The 16 that attended had a great time picking out paint colors and creating their unique designs on the bowls and cups! We are honored to help Empty Bowls be an encouraging resource the hungry and homeless in our community.
