UF Pledge Spring '11 Red Mango Social 4-07-11

After the Tom's shoes service event 11 people headed over to Red Mango to get a sweet treat and mingle with each other. Everyone hung out for a couple hours and had a good time. It was a good break since there is a lot of school stress right now at the end of the semester. It was great to relax! Kimberly Sweeny is the pledge class social chair.

UF Pledge Spring '11 Puppy Hill Farm Rescue at Petsmart Service 3-27-11

This event was planned by Corinne Oliphant, the pledge class service chair. At Petsmart the Puppy Hill Farm Animal Rescue group brings dogs and cats that are available for adoption. The 11 in attendance brought the animals in after they walked them. Pledges and members were told to talk to the customers and try to persuade them to adopt a pet. Before finishing the service event, the dogs were walked again. It was a great time spent with the animals and advocating for their adoption!

Eight members of the Cal Gamma chapter spent their Saturday at a local retirement community teaching seniors to make ice cream, cheese, and butter. Between cooking demonstrations, we presented posters on dairy cattle breeds and milk composition. Most of our afternoon was spent chatting with the seniors and sharing our love for dairy products!

UF Two Tails Ranch Service 4-10-11

UF Two Tails Ranch Service 4-10-11

This service event was planned by our spring semester pledge class but was opened to all members as a service event requirement. Two Tails Ranch is a "training, medical, breeding and retirement facility for hundreds of elephants and exotic felines for over 20 years." They are revamping their main barn and some back pens so we helped with general maintenance and landscaping. This was truly an incredible experience for the 10 members and several pledges that were able to attend to be able to interact with elephants and will hopefully be a service project the UF chapter of AZ will carry on in the following years.

UF Potluck Social 4-05-11

Every semester the pledge class plans a potluck for the pledge class and all of the members. This semester's theme was Southern Comfort. Potluck is always greatly anticipated since everyone that attends has a lot of fun, gets to dress up according to theme, and share delicious food! A testament to how fun these potlucks are is that 29 members and two alumni attended, not including those in attendance from the pledge class!

The UF chapter of AZ was represented at this year's Alpha Zeta national conference by our student advisor, fundraising chair, national service project chair, scribe, chronicler, chancellor, social chair, and treasurer. Our chronicler, Claire Page, won the Centennial Scholarship and Chronicler of the Year. Charlie Doyle won Treasurer of the Year. Rikki Schwarz won Member of the Year. She was the lead director for the National Service Project hosted by the University of Florida that took place nearby in Orlando, FL. As a whole, the Florida Chapter won Service to Community and New Member Development! Even though a handful of the members could go to St. Louis, the Florida chapter is greatly supported by all our members, and we are proud of our accomplishments. The yearly national conference is a fantastic way to meet and make friendships with AZ chapters from around the country. Every year our chapter greatly looks forward to going to/hearing about the activities of the conference and meeting new and old friends.

UF Road Clean Up Service 4-07-11

The UF chapter of AZ adopted a road a few years ago. Requirements to keep this road include at least six clean-ups per year. Since we do not hold events over the summer this comes to three road clean ups per semester. Nine members attended this clean up. This is a really great way to not only socialize together outdoors but help the environment and community by making sure all the trash is picked up and out of harm's way!

NALC

As a chapter we took 22 brothers to the National Agriculture Leadership Conference in St. Louis, MO.  When we arrived on Thursday we had registration during the day to receive our items for the conference, followed by a welcome reception that night.  During the welcome reception we had dinner, icebreakers, banner contest, and an overview of the scheduled plans for the conference.  On Friday, we started off with an internship/career fair where students got to talk with different companies about available jobs and internships.  Later, we broke out into our different agriculture tours which included animal science, plant science, and slow urban food.  Friday night we went to the city museum where we also had dinner.  On Saturday, there were breakout sessions all day until 4:15 and we concluded the night with the banquet.  At the banquet we had dinner, a guest speaker, and awards were presented.  The North Carolina Chapter came home with Chancellor, Censor, and Scribe of the year.  We also won the banner contest against the other chapters.  Altogether, we had a very successful trip and many great memories were made.

Garden Remodeling

On March 26th, Alpha Zeta with another organization known as AEHORT, Horticulture Student Association of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, and teachers participated in an activity which consisted of remodeling the interior garden of the library of the university. We did it with the purpose to carry the message to the community of the university on the importance of preserving green areas, because besides providing a beautiful landscape, it also provides good health for humans. Several species of plants were planted, among them were the orchids.
